Pi has a vast history an can even be traced back to the bible times as stated in the verse,
"And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits:
and a line of thirty cubits did compass it about. (I Kings 7, 23) "
This quote talks of the term pi which of that time had a
value of just "3". pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle!
The term pi was created by
the babylonians, they calculated the area of a circle by multiplying the square of the radius by 3.
However the first theoretical calculation of pi wasnt
until 287 B.C. This was done by a man named Archemedis of Syracuse. He used the area of a polygon inside of a circle then
calculated out the difference. Many nobles after Archemedis came up with logical ways to calculate pi. But it wasnt until
a french mathematician by the name of Georges Buffon. He based his calcultion upon probability rather then logic. His experiment
was done with a needle and a grid. He took a needle and dropped it upon the grid measuring where, and how the needle
landed. He took all his attempts and averaged out his findings to come up witha logical number for pi.
The probability was the last known experiment to calculate
the value of pi.
